Capacity building for young journalists on representation of gender by media

With support from the Australian Government via the Regional Media Support Fund and in collaboration with Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) – 2025-26

The Centre for Media and Alternative Communication (CMAC) is committed to strengthening ethical, inclusive and socially responsible journalism by equipping the next generation of media professionals with the knowledge and skills to critically engage with issues of gender and media representation.

As the first phase of this initiative, CMAC collaborated with subject experts, practicing journalists, media educators and university professors to develop a comprehensive curriculum on Gender, Media and News and its Impact on Society. The curriculum was rigorously tested with journalism students and faculty members from colleges, institutions and universities across India, enabling us to refine and strengthen the training based on extensive feedback before its finalization.

Following this process, CMAC successfully launched a series of workshops and master classes across the country. The programme commenced at the Department of Communication and Journalism, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad, followed by the Amity School of Communication, Amity University Haryana, Gurugram. Master classes were subsequently conducted at the Jindal School of Journalism and Communication, Sonipat, and at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.

The programme addresses critical issues including gender stereotypes, underrepresentation, objectification, traditional gender roles and gender-sensitive reporting. Through interactive workshops, master classes, mentorship, research and practical media production, participants learn to create inclusive, balanced and responsible journalism that reflects the diversity of contemporary society. CMAC envisions building a nationwide network of informed journalists, educators and media practitioners who will contribute to a more equitable media landscape while fostering public dialogue on the importance of fair and responsible representation across all forms of media.
