Published by the Oxford University Press, “Working in the mill no more” tells the story of the rise and decline of Ahmedabad’s 120,000 textile mill workers with more than 200 powerful images and an intense narrative. Photographed and designed by Parthiv Shah, the book has been authored by the eminent scholar on Labor rights in India, Prof. Jan Breman. The photographs, which were first shot in 1986 and then in 2003, vividly portray the journey of the mill workers from a once proud and hardworking lot to the now defunct textile industry, mauled by the onset of global capitalism. The book was also subsequently published by the Amsterdam University Press (2004).
