A children’s book aimed to educate young readers about the cultural heritage of the Nadaswaram, part of the “Bharat ke Kaladharmi” project fostering pride and curiosity in India’s artistic legacy.
“The Sound of the Gods: Kannan and His Nadaswaram” by Vidya Shah, with illustrations by Shivani J., is a captivating children’s book designed to educate young readers about the rich cultural heritage and history of the Nadaswaram, a classical South Indian wind instrument. This book is part of the innovative project “Bharat ke Kaladharmi,” which emerged during the COVID pandemic to document and preserve India’s tangible and intangible cultural legacy, with a particular emphasis on nurturing children’s understanding and appreciation. Supported by Coal India Limited (CIL) and co-published by CMAC and BHOOMA Trust, the project focuses on capacity building, archiving, and offline events to celebrate India’s artistic heritage and to instill a sense of pride and curiosity in young minds.
Vidya Shah, an award-winning musician and author, weaved together the journey of Mylapore Kannan, a young Nadaswaram artist, in “The Sound of the Gods.” Using meticulous research by Antara Shah supported by vibrant illustrations, she crafted a story that aspires to captivate and educate children. By introducing the historical significance and modern role of the Nadaswaram, she wishes to help young readers appreciate India’s diverse musical traditions and cultural heritage. “The Sound of the Gods” is thus entertaining while enlightening, nurturing a deeper connection to India’s cultural treasures among the younger generation.
