Janaki Bai had a voice with a terrific range, which could be heard from miles away, a voice not only powerful and deep but it was melodious and sonorous. The musicians of yesteryears used to say, “Janaki Bai ke kantha-swara me misri ghuli hui thi" (Janaki Bai's voice was sweet as sugar).

She received intensive music training from the famous Ustad Hassu Khan of Lucknow. There are many stories on why she was called Chhapan Chhuri one being the 56 knife scars she got from some jealous ruffian. A very accomplished artiste, she was adept not only in singing but also in writing verse and composing music and her compositions were published as Diwan-ai-Janaki.
